International Day Of Education: The Impact of Covid-19

The Covid-19 pandemic continues to be a global crisis impacting all factors of life. With cases increasing, the UK has entered its third national lockdown whereby schools, universities and colleges have officially closed for a second time. 

But while the debate about whether schools should be open or closed continues in almost every country in the world, the disruption is having the biggest affect on those who already have limited access to education.

Covid-19: Encouraging Signs Behind the Headlines in India

The Covid-19 Global Pandemic struck a world in which only 50% of the inhabitants have access to essential health services. No matter what processes were put in place to try and mitigate the effects of the virus, no models were ever likely to be deemed a success, though it has become increasingly clear that some international efforts were more prudent than others. Yet in many countries around the globe those efforts were necessarily underpinned by an unsung army of community groups and NGOs, putting their own health at risk to ensure the most vulnerable were not left even farther behind.

This year on the International Day of Rural Women, we recognise that across the globe, women lead the way with solutions and solidarity in the wake of Covid-19. This day was created to recognise the centrality of rural women in community development and regeneration, which in today's climate has become increasingly important. This year, the theme comprises 'Building rural women's resilience in the wake of COVID-19'.

Introducing... Grama Institute for the Poor

Grama Institute for the Poor is a wonderful community development organisation in rural Karnataka State, India. Their main goals are poverty alleviation, sustainable development and economic, social and political participation, with specific focus on the empowerment and social inclusion of women and young girls in the region. Sadly these women often find themselves and their families marginalised for a number of cultural and social reasons, leading to cyclical poverty, social and health issues, which Grama are keen to address at the root cause.

The Nisarga Foundation are an established non-profit organisation whose unique proposition is the support and protection of the forest dwelling 'Adivasi Tribe' with specific regard to the nutritional growth and development of tribal children and support for pregnant and new-born mothers. 

Their aim is to ensure positive socio-economic, cultural and political empowerment in the indigenous areas, while protecting the environment and nurturing its biodiversity.

Established in 1999, Partnerships for New Life are a community led organisation with over 20 years of experience in the development sector. Based in the South Western Terai region of Nepal, PNL focused initially on medical support with the overall aim of eradicating leprosy within the region.

Over the years their programmes have grown to include support for other disabilities and diseases directly and indirectly affecting the communities they support and a new emphasis on poverty alleviation and social development through income generation schemes.
